UMATILLA — Interested members of the public and media are invited to a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 9:30 a.m. for the 96-acre North Lake Community Park.
Located north of the City of Umatilla, the park will feature soccer and football fields, baseball diamonds, tennis and racquetball courts, a picnic area, restrooms and a playground. The estimated $15 million project is expected to take longer than a year and a half to complete. Lake County last month received a $200,000 state grant to help develop the park.
When completed, the park will be the largest recreational complex for the Lake County Department of Public Works, Parks and Trails Division. Formerly an orange grove, staff is currently clearing the land for the groundbreaking ceremony. Because the site is undeveloped, guests are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear.
For those driving to the site, the ceremony will take place at 40540 Roger Giles Road, which is about a one-eighth of a mile from County Road 450. Due to lack of parking at the site, guests are encouraged to park at 249 E. Collins St. in Umatilla. A bus will transport guests to the site. Another bus will depart from the Lake County Administration Building, located at 315 W. Main St., Tavares, for the ceremony. To reserve a seat for bus transportation, call the Parks and Trails Division at (352) 253-4948.
