Clermont to play host to skateboarding contest attracting pros from across U.S.

RELEASE DATE: April 25, 2013

TAVARES — Lake County is cosponsoring The Clermont 5K and 10K Skate and Slalom Clinic, the first in a series of skateboarding contests that will seek to promote sanctioned longboard racing in Lake County.
The event will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 27 at Lake Louisa State Park, Clermont.
“We are excited to have a new and diverse outdoor-recreation activity in Lake County. It gives us an opportunity to showcase the unique landscape that Lake County has to offer our visitors,” said Robert Chandler, director of the Lake County Economic Development and Tourism Department. “The Ian Tilmann Foundation is a great advocate for sports safety and a valuable partner for Lake County.”
The event, hosted by the Ian Tilmann Foundation, a nonprofit organization, and cosponsored by Sector 9 Skateboard Company, will feature a Skateboard 5K and 10K distance push race sanctioned by the International Distance Skating Association (IDSA). A Slalom Clinic, sponsored by Keith Hollien, a world-class professional skater, will take place after the races. The event also will include a Guinness World Record attempt by pro-skater Jimmy Soladay for the “longest one-wheeled manual (Wheelie) on level ground” with results certified by the IDSA. More than 13 pro-skaters and dozens of sponsored skaters will compete for the money purse provided by Sector 9 of San Diego, Calif. Amateur Skaters will compete in the Open Divisions for product prizes provided by event cosponsors.
The park gates will open at 8 a.m. On-site registration for the races and clinic will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Lake Louisa parking area. The IDSA races will start at 10 a.m. The Guinness World Record attempt will take place at 1 p.m. and the Slalom Clinic will start at 1:30 p.m.

“This is our first longboard race in Clermont and the sponsorship of the Lake County Tourism Development Council is greatly appreciated, said Marcy Tilmann, director of the Ian Tilmann Foundation, which hands out free safety helmets. “The Foundation actively promotes helmet use in hopes that others won’t suffer such a senseless and preventable tragedy as struck our family.”

Tilmann also said, “The Longboard race is the first of many events planned for Clermont and Lake County.”
