TAVARES — Lake County’s newest public recreational area will officially open May 23 with amenities to include fields for football, soccer, baseball and softball, a limestone exercise path for walking, running and biking, and a parking lot.
The ribbon-cutting will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 23 at East Lake Community Park, 24809 Wallick Road, Sorrento. Commissioner Leslie Campione, Lake County District 4, will speak, and School Board Member Debbie Stivender also will attend.
In 2006, the county began a property search for an active community park in the Mt. Plymouth and Sorrento area. After planning concepts for the park, in 2008 the county government began an interlocal agreement with the Lake County School Board regarding joint use of the East Lake Community Park and Sorrento Elementary School, adjacent to the park. Construction on the park began in 2012.
“The area has waited a very long time for this park to come to fruition,” said Chairman Campione. “In order to open the fields and trails, the county has been resourceful, re-using construction materials from other sites. Permanent improvements will be made as funds become available.”
The park’s hours of operation are from 6:30 a.m. to sunset seven days a week, including holidays. The 34-acre site is located off County Road 437, between Olmac and Wallick roads.
The baseball/softball fields are available only for practice at this time. Leagues interested in using any of the fields must reserve them by contacting the Lake County Parks & Trails Division for information, rates, and league-use forms.
