TAVARES — The UF/IFAS Lake County Extension is offering two hands-on, food-preparation classes this summer, both to take place at the Lake County Agricultural Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares.
• Savory Summer Suppers
5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 18
It can be hard to be inspired to cook when the weather is hot. Beat the heat with easy-to-prepare cook and no-cook meal ideas. Learn what’s in season this summer and ways to include more Florida foods in your meals. Then, prepare and sample what you've learned. The class will be taught by Julie England, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent II with the UF/IFAS Lake County Extension. The cost of the class is $12 and registration is required by June 15.
• Food Modification for Special Needs
9 a.m. to 4 p.m Thursday, July 25
Professional caregivers will learn about the unique food and nutrition needs of the frail older adult, and preparation of texture-modified foods for individuals with swallowing problems. Topics include Sensory Deficits and the Frail Older Adult; Swallowing Problems of the Frail Older Adult; and Pureed Food Preparation. The class will be taught by Wendy Dahl, Ph.D., R.D. and F.D.C., and Assistant Professor of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Florida. The cost is $20 and includes lunch.
