Unwanted medications, household hazardous
waste to be collected July 25 in Minneola

RELEASE DATE: July 18, 2013

MINNEOLA – The Lake County Solid Waste Division, in partnership with the City of Minneola and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, is asking residents to dispose of unwanted medications at a Household Hazardous Waste Collection event from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, July 25 at Minneola City Hall, 800 N. U.S. Highway 27, Minneola.

The purpose of the event is to encourage Lake County residents to properly remove unwanted or expired ingestible medicines, like cough syrups, as well as vitamins and supplements, from their homes. The proper disposal of these substances helps prevent accidental ingestion by minors and animals, and also avoids potential water supply contamination by those who would deposit these items down the drain.

The County’s Household Hazardous Waste Mobile Unit also will be on-hand to collect unwanted household hazardous waste. Residents will be able to drop-off waste products such as lawn and gardening materials, photo and swimming pool chemicals, paint and related products, cleaning solutions, motor oil and used gas, batteries, fluorescent lamps, light bulbs and small propane tanks.

The staff at the event will be offering convenient drive-thru disposal of unwanted medications and household hazardous waste, so residents won’t have to leave their vehicle.

Materials such as infectious waste, solvents, chemical laboratory waste and radioactive waste are prohibited.

For more information about the unwanted medication take back and Household Hazardous Collection event, call the Lake County Solid Waste Division at 352-343-3776.
