Master Gardener to present on planting
vegetables during ‘Saturday in the Garden’

RELEASE DATE: July 25, 2013

TAVARES — The University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County will host a “Saturday in the Garden” speaker series featuring a 1.5-hour-long class on “Florida Vegetable Gardening,” at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Lake County Agricultural Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. 

“Participants will learn about site selection, optimal planting times, soil amendments and how to minimize pests,” said Brooke Moffis, residential horticulture agent. 

To register for the class, visit http://august32013saturdayinthegarden.eventbrite.com. The fee for the class is $5 for adults and free for children younger than 16. For more information, call 352-343-4101. “Saturday in the Garden” takes place the first Saturday of each month.

Participants also are invited to explore and enjoy a picnic at Discovery Gardens, a 3.5-acre habitat next to the Agricultural Center. The gardens are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the first Saturday of each month and attendance to the class is not required to visit the gardens. Entrance to Discovery Gardens is free.

The UF/IFAS Extension in Lake County provides research-based information and educational programs cooperatively with the Lake County Board of County Commissioners and the University of Florida for all aspects of horticulture, agriculture, food safety, the home environment, financial management and 4-H youth programs.

The mission of the UF/IFAS Extension in Lake County is to develop knowledge in agricultural, human and natural resources and to make that knowledge accessible to sustain and enhance the quality of human life.
