RELEASE DATE: September 22, 2006

South Lake Connector
Having started in the Lake County 4-H Program before they were married, they took on school club leadership after their marriage in 1956. With only a few years absence from the Lake County 4-H Program, they continued their school club leadership in Alachua County.

Gene was also employed as an assistant agent in Manatee County. Their Bradenton club had the unique honor of having all the members win at County and District events one of those years.

In the late 1960s, they returned to Lake County and began the Golden Triangle 4-H club. Gene’s involvement is now with the EGC Target Teens.

A letter of congratulations from Dr. Marilyn Norman, Assistant State 4-H Dean, was read during a slide presentation consisting of pictures and newspaper articles. Comments from the audience included Alice Ayers, past Lake County 4-H Agent, Doris Taylor, retired county agent, Carla Gnann-Thompson, a former 4-H member, and Nancy Jo Davidson, a 4-H club leader. Presenter of the program, Ray Grayford, read a letter from his daughter, Amber, 4-H alumni, telling of her growth through Cordella’s leadership.

Annette Conn, co-presenter, presented the couple with a basket of 50 yellow roses. The Lake County 4-H Program salutes Gene and Cordella LaRoe for their dedication to the youth of Lake County and the State of Florida by their volunteer leadership with 4-H for these 50 years. Both Gene and Cordella are continuing in their service to the 4-H Youth Development program of Lake County.
