Residents invited to visit the many faces of Lake County agriculture during
2013 Lake County Farm Tour

RELEASE DATE: October 29, 2013

TAVARES – The University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is hosting its annual Lake County Farm Tour on Friday, Nov. 22 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Participants will meet at the Lake County Agriculture Center, located at 1951 Woodlea Road in Tavares, where check-in will begin at 8 a.m. The tour bus will depart from the Agriculture Center promptly, at 8:30 a.m. to begin the tour.

The stops on this year’s Farm Tour are as follows:

  • Tedder Nursery, Lady Lake
    Tedder Nursery is a wholesale propagation nursery that raises a range of tree species from seeds and cuttings to help supply other growers. 
  • A&A Orchards, Lady Lake (http://ladylakepeach.com)
    A&A Orchards grow U-Pick peaches. Owner Pat Murdock will tell participants about peaches that have been adapted to Florida and how he grows them on his farm. 
  • Heather Oaks Farm, Lady Lake (http://heatheroaksfarm.com)
    Heather Oaks Farm is a Bed & Breakfast, a U-Pick fruit farm, Louisiana Iris nursery and a horse farm. Their U-Pick fruit includes muscadine grapes, blueberries and blackberries. The farm is a model of diversity in cropping. 
  • Grand Oaks, Weirsdale (http://www.thegrandoaks.com)
    Grand Oaks is an equestrian resort with over 400 acres of scenic pastures and majestic oak trees. The resort is renowned for carriage driving competitions, polo and a variety of horse riding disciplines, in addition to its famous Carriage Museum. They are one of Lake County’s largest agritourism sites.
  • Seaquest Farm Dairy, Weirsdale (http://seaquestfarmdairygoats-com.webs.com)
    Seaquest Farm Dairy has several types of dairy goats and make goat milk, goat milk soap and cheeses. The owners will be demonstrating how to make goat’s milk soap.

The fee to take part in the Farm Tour is $20 per person, and boxed lunches will be provided by T.G. Deli while on the tour. Pre-registration is required by Tuesday, Nov. 12, as space is limited. To register, visit https://2013farmtour.eventbrite.com.
