Public Safety urges the use of weather radios in preparation for possible severe weather

RELEASE DATE: February 12, 2014

TAVARES — With a chance of severe weather approaching this evening, the Lake County Public Safety Department would like to remind residents about the importance of owning a battery-powered, tone-alert NOAA weather radio.

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Melbourne, Fla. is predicting the potential for severe weather conditions for Lake County beginning at about 4 p.m. and continuing through 7 p.m., with a possibility for damaging wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour, heavy rainfall, cloud to ground lightning and isolated tornadoes.

Weather radios broadcast NWS warnings, watches, forecasts and other non-weather related hazard information 24 hours a day.

“We urge our residents to plan appropriately for incoming weather and stress the importance of having a working weather radio,” said Tommy Carpenter, Lake County’s Emergency Management Division Manager. “Being able to receive alerts, particularly during the evening, can ensure families receive warning to seek shelter and remain safe during severe weather.”
