TAVARES – Henrietta, the emaciated beagle/walker hound who gave birth to her puppies via Caesarean section at the Lake County Animal Services shelter last month is benefitting from some tender loving care.
The 6-year-old mama was located by Animal Services officers in Umatilla, already in labor, and rushed into the shelter where veterinarian Dr. Julie-Anne Corda performed the emergency surgery to save Henrietta and her tiny puppies.
Animal Services volunteer and photographer Whitney Luckhart has been fostering Henrietta ever since, and is happy to report Henrietta is gaining weight and perking up on her special high fat, high protein diet.
“She has been sleeping in bed with me,” said Luckhart. “She is one of those dogs who probably never spent time in a house – ever. I put her on my couch and she is like ‘This is fantastic!’”
Henrietta, who is being treated for heartworms, and her puppies, will all be put up for adoption through the South Lake Animal League (SLAL) when they are healthy.
“I think she will make some family very happy,” said Luckhart.
In the meantime, Luckhart has organized a pet photo shoot fundraiser to benefit the K-9 family on Saturday, March 29 at the SLAL, 4648 Baptist Island Road, Groveland. For a $10 donation, pet owners will receive a mini-photo session with their animals.
