TAVARES — The Friends of the Lake County Horticultural Learning Center (HLC) at Discovery Gardens will host the Second Annual “Bloomin’ Barbeque” on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Discovery Gardens.
Discovery Gardens is adjacent to the Lake County Agricultural Center, which is located off State Road 19, at 1951 Woodlea Road in Tavares.
The fundraising event will feature food from Sugarboo’s Bar-B-Q, a cash bar and lively entertainment by The Blackwater Creek Bluegrass Band. A cruise, donated by Royal Caribbean, will be auctioned to the highest bidder. In addition, the highest bid can enjoy two nights at a charming three-bedroom beach house located directly on New Smyrna Beach. There will also be a silent auction and door prizes. Guests can enjoy self-guided tours of Discovery Gardens during the event.
With 20 themed gardens, including a string of lush courtyards and six specially designed children’s gardens, Discovery Gardens is a virtual outdoor learning center for young students and aspiring gardeners. Proceeds from this event will go toward the construction of a Discovery Gardens pavilion. The building will include restrooms for garden visitors and a classroom for the many programs offered by the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and the Lake County Cooperative Extension.
At this time, the Friends of the HLC have raised nearly half the funds needed to begin construction. The Friends of the HLC is a not-for-profit organization and donations are tax deductible. Tickets are $25 per person in advance.
