Water Safety Day events scheduled for 6 cities

RELEASE DATE: May 1, 2014

TAVARES – The Lake County Public Safety Department, Lake Emergency Medical Services, participating municipalities and various partners have joined together with Swimming for Life to host Water Safety Day, a free swimming demonstration for children to be held in six Lake County cities on Saturday, May 17.

This is the third annual – and largest – water safety and drowning prevention event the partners have organized with the goal of keeping Lake County children safe around the area’s many lakes and pools.

“I am so happy that the cities and county are partnering to help prevent drowning and water-related accidents in our lakes and pools,” said Lake County Commissioner Sean Parks. “We must remain vigilant in our public safety efforts, and education and awareness are key to saving lives.”

Highlights of each event include mock drowning rescues, life jacket fittings, CPR demonstrations, door prizes and giveaways, safety video presentations, swimming lessons and registrations.

Each day in the U.S., 10 people die from drowning and two of these are children under the age of 14, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Florida has the highest drowning rate in the nation for children under 14, according to the Florida Department of Health.

“Our firefighters don’t just put out fires,” said Lake County Fire Rescue Lt. Kathy Edwards, who is helping coordinate the event with Ginny Harrison of Swimming for Life. “We are here to educate the public about the dangers of drowning and how to swim more safely.”
