Employment and education trips reinstated under Transportation Disadvantaged Program

RELEASE DATE: June 17, 2014

TAVARES – Employment and education trips will be reinstated beginning Monday, June 23 for Lake County’s paratransit service, Lake County Connection, under the Transportation Disadvantaged Program.

A state-funded program, Lake County Connection provides low-cost transportation throughout Lake County to individuals who qualify as “transportation disadvantaged” as defined by state statutes for purposes such as medical, nutritional, employment and educational trips. The Lake County Transportation Disadvantaged Program is provided primarily for individuals who are mobility and developmentally impaired, at-risk children and senior citizens. This service was established for individuals who do not have access to any other means of transportation, including public bus service, because of age, disability or income. It is also provided to those who do not receive services from a sponsoring agency such as Medicaid.

The education trips will cover college and vocational education, but all other students ride free on the county’s LakeXpress fixed route bus system and are not eligible for paratransit services.

Lake County Transportation Disadvantaged Program is a limited-ride program with reservations taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Passengers must make reservations at least two business days prior to the date service is being requested. Lake County Transportation Disadvantaged Program is available Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. - 7 p.m.

“We are confident that these additional employment and education trips will offer a broader range of service that will prove valuable to county citizens who need it most,” said Ken Harley, public transportation manager.

The service is funded through the following agencies: Lake County Board of County Commissioners, Florida Department of Transportation, Agency for Persons with Disabilities, Agency for Health Care Administration (Medicaid), Florida Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged (CTD), MidFlorida Community Services and Elder Affairs.

Individuals who are interested in using the Lake County Transportation Disadvantaged Program must apply for services by completing an eligibility application. To obtain an eligibility application, call 352-326-2278 or download an application at www.lakecountyfl.gov.
