Lake County to host informational meetings in September about new trash collection services

RELEASE DATE: August 15, 2014

TAVARES – Lake County is hosting informational meetings throughout the county to help residents living in unincorporated Lake County better understand upcoming changes to solid waste collection, and the use of the new carts provided by the county.

Lake County’s residential curbside garbage collection is changing on Monday, Oct. 6 to a “1-1-1” service consisting of once-per-week trash, one-per-week recycling and once-per-week yard waste pick-up. As part of the new program, all residents who currently receive collection services from the county will be issued free trash and recycling carts between August and October, which all residents will be required to begin using starting the week of Monday, Oct. 6.

All residents in unincorporated Lake County will receive two free carts: one 95-gallon cart for trash and one 65-gallon cart for recycling. Residents living in retirement communities with homeowners associations that opted to use the new carts will receive one 65-gallon cart for trash and one 35-gallon cart for recycling.

Residents may change the sizes of their carts at no charge from Oct. 6, 2014 - April 1, 2015. Available sizes include 95-, 65- and 35-gallon containers. After April 1, there will be a $40 delivery fee for cart exchanges; however, there will be no fee to change to a larger recycling cart.

Additional household garbage carts are available for a one-time fee of $60, plus a $40 delivery fee. The delivery fee will be waived for residents who pick-up the extra cart from their hauler. An annual disposal cost will be levied on a homeowner’s TRIM notice (tax bill) for the additional cart.
