UF/IFAS Extension to offer money mentoring training

RELEASE DATE: August 29, 2014

TAVARES – The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is offering Florida Master Money Mentor (FMMM) training, which teaches volunteers to help educate those needing assistance in personal money management through small group sessions and one-on-one financial coaching.

Mentors must successfully complete an initial 26 hours of training, both online and in-person, as well as attend a monthly professional development meeting. Following the training, volunteers provide at least 50 hours of financial mentoring over the course of a year. 

The FMMM training will be held at the Lake County Agricultural Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares, on the following dates:

• Tuesday, Sept. 30, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
• Wednesday, Oct. 15, 9 a.m. - noon
• Tuesday, Oct. 28, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Anyone can become a Florida Master Money Mentor volunteer and no previous financial education is required. Volunteers must be over the age of 18, have good communication skills, be able to work with individuals in a respectful and nonjudgmental manner, maintain participant confidentiality and trust, have access to email, telephone and transportation,  attend all training sessions and volunteer commitments and commit to following the UF/IFAS Extension’s research-based financial education strategies and recommendations.

The program costs $40 and includes background checks, training materials and refreshments. Additional information and the FMMM application are available at http://bit.ly/lakefinances. The deadline to apply is Sept. 23.
