Wings & Wildflowers Festival welcomes international birding expert and TV host James Currie

RELEASE DATE: September 19, 2014

LEESBURG – The 3rd Annual Wings & Wildflowers Festival, to be held Oct. 3-5 at Venetian Gardens, 201 E. Dixie Ave., Leesburg, is bringing some of the nation’s top birding, wildflower and nature experts to Lake County to share their knowledge. A surprise addition to this year’s festival’s lineup is James Currie, internationally acclaimed birder and the host of the Nikon’s Birding Adventures TV show.

Festival-goers will have an opportunity to meet Currie as he discusses his upcoming book, “When Eagles Roar,” at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3 at the Leesburg Community Center in Venetian Gardens. Currie will read excerpts from the book and tell stories of his childhood in South Africa growing up under apartheid. He will discuss how freely roaming Table Mountain in Cape Town kicked off his love of wildlife and birds, and how his thirst for adventure and his mischievous nature led him into many humorous and sometimes life threatening situations.

“When Eagles Roar” delves into Currie’s experiences as a game ranger and birding guide, as well as the managing director of Africa Foundation.  The book also provides a rare personal glimpse into the profound effect that AIDS is having on society in his homeland.  Currie gets personal in the book, writing about his emotional decision to move to the United States to start his own birding TV show and his own journey overcoming physical challenges.

Currie will also make an appearance, joined by Lake County Tourism Supervisor Debi Dyer, on LakeFrontTV at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 to discuss his autobiography, as well as Lake County’s unique birding and ecotourism attractions. He will return as a keynote speaker for the 4th Annual Wings & Wildflowers Festival, to be held Oct. 2-4, 2015.

The Annual Wings & Wildflowers Festival shines a spotlight on Lake County’s growing reputation as Florida’s premier birding destination. The goal of the festival is to enhance awareness and appreciation of Lake County’s ecotourism, natural resources and quality of life.
