Lake County to roll out new curbside collection service on Oct. 6

RELEASE DATE: September 22, 2014

TAVARES – Lake County is rolling out its new residential curbside garbage collection system on Monday, Oct. 6 and shifting to a “1-1-1” service consisting of once-per-week trash, one-per-week recycling and once-per-week yard waste pick-up. As part of the new program, all residents in unincorporated areas of the county who currently receive collection services from the county are being issued free trash and recycling carts, which all residents will be required to use beginning the week of Oct. 6.

Residents’ usual trash, recycling and yard waste collection days may change, so people are encouraged to log on to www.lakecountyfl.gov/garbagecollection and input their addresses to find out their collection days.

Residents may make a one-time change to the sizes of their carts at no charge between Oct. 6, 2014 and April 1, 2015 by calling the county at 352-343-9400. Available cart sizes include 95-, 65- and 35-gallon containers. After April 1, there will be a $40 delivery fee for cart exchanges. The delivery fee will be waived for residents who choose to exchange their cart at the hauler’s cart exchange location. Residents may also purchase an extra trash cart for a one-time fee of $60, plus a $40 delivery fee (unless residents pick up the cart from their hauler.) An additional fee will be levied on the homeowner’s TRIM notice (tax bill) for the additional cart to cover the cost of annual collection.

Lake County’s new recycling carts will fit more recyclables than the prior yellow containers, helping to reduce waste volume and increase recycling efforts. The county’s single-stream recycling program means that all recyclables such as paper products, plastic containers, metal and glass, can be disposed of in the same recycling cart, without any need to separate or sort.

Lake County has also organized more than 30 solid waste informational community meetings since January to help inform the public about the changes that come with the new service, and to answer any questions.

For more information about the changes in curbside collection services, contact the Lake County Solid Waste Division by email at garbagecollection@lakecountyfl.gov, call 352-343-9400 or log on to www.lakecountyfl.gov/garbagecollection.
