The 9th Annual ‘Stuff the Bus’ campaign aims to collect thousands of pounds of food for local food pantries

RELEASE DATE: October 23, 2014

TAVARES – To benefit local food pantries leading up to the holiday season, the Lake County Department of Community Services’ Public Transportation Division is hosting the 9th Annual Stuff the Bus campaign from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8.

During the event, Lake County Connection buses will be collecting nonperishable food at the following locations:

• Walmart
  17030 U.S. Highway 441, Mount Dora

• Walmart
  2501 Citrus Blvd., Leesburg

“The goal of the annual food drive is to stuff donated nonperishable food and canned goods, baby food and pet food into a county bus,” said Ken Harley, Manager of the Public Transportation Division. “Last year, we collected more than 4,500 pounds of food, and this year we hope to exceed that amount.”

The food collected during the Stuff the Bus campaign will be donated to The Salvation Army in Leesburg and the Lake Cares Food Pantry in Mount Dora, directly benefiting the local community.

Nonperishable food items can include canned meats, vegetables, fruits, stews and chili,
canned or dry soups, canned or packaged pasta, peanut butter, tea bags and ground coffee, hot and cold cereals, rice, cake and pancake mixes, syrup, powdered milk, juice boxes, granulated sugar, baby food and formula, granola and cereal bars and dry or canned pet food.

For residents who can’t make it to the event on Nov. 8, nonperishable food items may be dropped off at the Lake County Public Transportation Division’s office, located at 2440 U.S. Highway 441/27 in Fruitland Park, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Volunteers are also needed at each location to encourage people to donate items and help pack as much nonperishable food as possible into the buses. For more information about the Stuff the Bus campaign, or to sign up as a volunteer, contact Amy Bradford at 352-323-5723 or ABradford@lakecountyfl.gov.
