TAVARES — In observance of Arbor Day, the Lake Soil & Water Conservation District, in partnership with the Florida Forest Service, is sponsoring two events in January to give away bare-root tree seedlings.
The first event will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15 at the Lake County Agricultural Center’s Horticultural Learning Center, located at 1951 Woodlea Road in Tavares. The second tree giveaway is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 32630 N. Whitney Road in Leesburg.
Each person will be allowed to take one tree of each available variety including Green Ash, Redbud, Buttonbush, Winged Elm and Slash Pine. The trees are 12- to 24-inch seedlings and are free, but donations will be accepted to support the annual tree giveaway program. Trees will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.
In Florida, Arbor Day is recognized on the third Friday in January, which this year falls of Friday, Jan. 16. Arbor Day is often celebrated with tree planting ceremonies and events, such as Lake County’s annual tree giveaway.
