3 classes offered on ‘Closing Your Seasonal Home’

RELEASE DATE: February 2, 2015

TAVARES – The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is giving part-time residents three opportunities to learn tips and tricks for closing their seasonal homes.

The free programs, presented by Julie England, Family and Consumer Sciences extension agent with UF/IFAS Extension in Lake County, will discuss the proper way to close a home or leave for an extended period of time, including preparing interiors and exteriors, preventing mold and mildew, storm preparation, updating documents, preventing pests and protection from burglars. Participants will gain an understanding of what they can do to minimize the possibility of discovering serious issues when they return.

“People aren’t the only ones who love Florida's weather. Mildew also thrives in our warm and humid environment, said England. “If you are leaving home for an extended period of time, whether for the season or a long vacation, develop a plan to prevent damage to your home while you are gone. An empty home is susceptible to moisture, mildew, pests, storms and more.”
