Mock DUI crash to be hosted at South Lake High School to coincide with prom season

RELEASE DATE: April 1, 2015

GROVELAND – Students will learn firsthand about the consequences of driving under the influence during a mock DUI crash at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 9 at South Lake High School, located at 15600 Silver Eagle Road, Groveland.

The Lake County Community Traffic Safety Team (CTST) will be hosting the event with high school juniors and seniors at the school’s football field. The educational program was designed to create a realistic scene showing how alcohol-related traffic accidents can impact those involved.

“This mock DUI crash provides a realistic look at the serious and horrifying consequences of drinking and driving,” said Noble Olasimbo, president of the CTST. “The demonstrations help encourage students not to drive under the influence.”

The mock DUI crash is made possible with the help of partners including The Lake County Board of County Commissioners, Lake County Sheriff's Office, the Lake County School Board, the Lake County Fire Rescue Division, City of Groveland Police and Fire Departments, Lake County Public Transportation Division, Lake County Public Works Department, Lake Emergency Medical Services, Life Care, Florida Highway Patrol, Office of the State Attorney Fifth Judicial Circuit of Florida, Brewer & Sons Funeral Home and ABATE of FL, Inc.

The Lake County CTST is a multi-jurisdictional agency working in cooperation with Lake County, its municipalities, various community organizations and concerned citizens. The CTST uses a multi-disciplinary approach to solve roadway safety problems in Lake County. The team is comprised of individuals representing engineering, law enforcement, emergency services, traffic safety education and the public.

The CTST recently hosted a mock DUI crash at Eustis High School.

For more information about the upcoming event, call Noble Olasimbo at 352-483-9092 or Kenneth Harley at 352-323-5713.
