LEESBURG — The 4th Annual Wings and Wildflowers Festival celebrates the beauty and significance of Lake County’s birds and wildflowers through education and outdoor adventures for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Dozens of exciting events and activities are scheduled during the three-day festival, to be hosted Oct. 2-4, including a number of workshops, presentations and demonstrations centered at Venetian Gardens, located at 201 E. Dixie Ave. in Leesburg.
New to the festival this year is “Hook Kids on Fishing,” coordinated by Anglers for Conservation, the Fish Florida Foundation and the Teen Sportfishing Association, which will teach children helpful skills such as knot-tying, casting and fish handling. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Venetian Gardens’ Gazebo by the shoreline on Dozier Circle. The first 150 children to arrive will receive a free fishing rod and reel. Registration is available online at www.wingsandwildflowers.com/Activities.
Also on Saturday during the festival, the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens and Gatorland will provide budding zoologists with an opportunity to get up close and personal with all types of critters. Festival-goers will also have the opportunity to meet Swamp Girl and hear her educational adventure stories about exploring Florida’s wildlife on Sunday, Oct. 4 from noon-12:45 p.m. and from 2-2:45 p.m. at the Venetian Gardens stage. A highlight of last year’s festival, children can again marvel at the unique butterfly experience during a walk-through exhibit filled with native plants offering direct contact with free-flying Florida butterflies. Additional children’s activities include make-and-take crafts, games and free face painting.
