Thousands of cyclists expected to descend upon South Lake during upcoming event
Motorists are asked to use caution while traveling along the event's routes

RELEASE DATE: November 4, 2015

CLERMONT — South Lake County will soon play host to thousands of cyclists during the 36th Annual Horrible Hundred, being held on Saturday, Nov. 14 and Sunday, Nov. 15.

On Saturday, cyclists will participate in trail rides along South Lake Trail beginning at 9 a.m., with route options spanning from 2 to 25 miles. On Sunday, the Horrible Hundred rides begin at Waterfront Park, 685 W. Montrose St., Clermont.

Several local roads could be impacted, as cyclists trek the available 35-mile, 70-mile and 100-mile routes. Motorists are asked to use caution when traveling throughout the area, and to remember that bicycles on the roadway are, by law, vehicles with the same rights, and responsibilities as motorized vehicles.

While sharing the road with cyclists, motorists should keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Allow at least three feet of clearance when passing bicyclists on the road
  • Look for cyclists before opening a car door or pulling from a parking space
  • Yield to cyclists at intersections and as directed by signs and signals
  • Be especially watchful for cyclists when making turns, either left or right

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 48,000 injuries and 743 pedalcyclists deaths occurred during motor vehicle traffic crashes in the U.S. in 2013, with 133 of those fatalities occurring in Florida.

During the event, bicyclists are asked to follow these general rules:

  • Helmets are required on all rides
  • Be courteous to drivers and do not block the roadways
  • Stop at all signs, and obey the rules of the road
  • Ride single-file if impeding traffic
  • Pull completely off of the road at rest stops
  • No headphones allowed
