EUSTIS — Lake County, in partnership with the City of Eustis, recently completed a joint sidewalk retrofit project along Kurt Street near Lake Technical College.
“These improvements brought the existing sidewalks up to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance and addressed the concerns of pedestrians in the area,” said Jim Stivender, Lake County Public Works Director. “Students attending Eustis Heights Elementary School and Lake Technical College also benefit from the improved sidewalks as they may walk along the sidewalks without fear of any potential trip hazards.”
The sidewalks serve several residential areas including West Seminole and West Charlotte in the West Lynnhurst neighborhood, as well as local apartments and the Hampton House assisted living facility. The sidewalks also benefit commuters using LakeXpress' Route 2 and the bus shelter in front of Lake Technical College.
Lake County Public Works took the lead on the project and construction management, with assistance from the City of Eustis Public Works Department. Both Lake Technical College and Lake County Schools supported the project coordination.
The total project length was 2,652 feet of which 1,504 feet of the existing sidewalk was retrofitted to meet current ADA requirements. The project cost $81,362 and was funded through the infrastructure (penny) sales tax. Additional improvements along Kurt Street will include pavement repairs and resurfacing over the next three years.
