LEESBURG — As part of the Lake-Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization's (MPO) Safe Access to Schools initiative and the Countywide Sidewalk Program, the Lake County Public Works Department recently completed a new sidewalk along Thomas Avenue in Leesburg.
The 3,556-foot sidewalk from Griffin Avenue (County Road 44A) to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (County Road 460) is part of the two-mile student walking zone for Carver Middle School. Additional improvements in the area also include a signaled crosswalk to allow for pedestrians and students to safely cross the intersection.
The sidewalk not only serves students, but also LakeXpress commuters and people visiting the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Leesburg Complex, Leesburg Landing, Silver Pointe Leesburg Apartments, the Crossing at Leesburg Apartments, and the Walmart shopping center, as well as other commercial business in the area.
The sidewalk cost $169,741 and was paid for with funding from the FDOT’s Safe Routes to Schools Grant. The sidewalk will connect to a future city sidewalk along Thomas Avenue. The project was planned and designed with coordination between Lake County Public Works, the Lake-Sumter MPO and Lake County Schools.
