CLERMONT — After one month of free service, Lake County’s Transit Division will begin collecting fares for LakeXpress’s new Route 50 bus beginning Monday, Jan. 4.
Route 50 was launched Dec. 1 and provides service between South Lake and Orange County, including stops at Mascotte City Hall, South Lake Hospital and the South Lake Campus of Lake-Sumter State College. The bus makes fixed stops primarily along State Road 50 between Mascotte and the Winter Garden Regional Shopping Center, where passengers may transfer to LYNX Link 105 to Orlando.
Bus passes for Route 50 riders will be available to purchase on the bus. Fares are $1 each way, but half priced fares are available for riders 60 years or older and individuals with disabilities. Free rides are available for students and children under five years of age who are accompanied by a fare-paying chaperone. A regular one-day pass for unlimited rides is $3, a 30-day pass with unlimited rides is $30 and a 10-ride pass is $8. Only cash is accepted, and exact fares are required for all purchases.
Route 50 operates Monday through Friday, 5 a.m. - 8 p.m., except for federal holidays. The route is estimated to have a ridership of upwards of 36,000 passengers in its first year, with transit officials expecting it to be widely used by those commuting to work, students and shoppers.
Schedules and maps for all LakeXpress routes are available online in both English and Spanish at www.ridelakexpress.com. For more information, call 352-326-8637.
