Judge Bill Milton to be the guest speaker during the Lake County Historical Society’s annual meeting

RELEASE DATE: April 18, 2016

TAVARES —The Lake County Historical Society is inviting the public to the Historic Courthouse, located at 317 W. Main St., Tavares, for its annual meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 28. Lake County Retired Judge W.A. “Bill” Milton Jr. will be the keynote speaker during the event.

The public is encouraged to attend the meeting to learn more about the society’s recent progress and future plans, as well as to enjoy refreshments and a free self-guided tour of the museum. During the meeting, the society will also elect its officers.

Among the many exhibits, visitors can discover Walt Disney’s connection to Paisley, the people behind the names of Tavares’ most well-traveled roads, the muddled history of the federal government’s misspelling of Haynes Creek and why Lake County may lay claim to the oldest Boy Scout troop in Florida.

Sanna Henderson, president of the Lake County Historical Society, is encouraging citizens to consider joining the society, which costs $15 annually, or volunteer for upcoming events.

The Lake County Historical Museum is located on the first floor of the Lake County Historic Courthouse and is open Thursday - Saturday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., except during legal holidays. The building was erected in 1922, and in 1998 was placed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Group tours of the museum are available by appointment by calling 352-343-9890.
