TAVARES — Lake County park rangers are inviting residents to enjoy the great outdoors in the natural shade of the area’s public lands during three June events.
The Ellis Acres Reserve Nature Hike will be held on Saturday, June 4 from 9-11 a.m. at the property, located at 25302 County Road 42, Paisley. The 417-acre reserve contains longleaf pine wooded pasture and forested wetlands and sits on the western shoreline of Lake Akron. During this ecology hike, participants may spot Florida black bears, sandhill cranes, wild turkeys and white-tailed deer.
On Saturday, June 11 from 7:30-11 a.m., nature lovers are invited to the Quarterly Bird & Butterfly Survey at the Pasture Reserve, 5144 Lake Erie Road, Groveland. The property is known as the heart of the Floridan aquifer and is a mosaic of uplands and wetlands. Volunteers are needed to assist in surveying the bird and butterfly population at the property to help with land management.
To participate, knowledge of common species is a plus, but not required. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, field guides, water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat and hiking shoes.
The Herp Hike at Ferndale Preserve, to be held on Sunday, June 12 from 9-11 a.m. at the Ferndale Preserve, 19220 County Road 455, Ferndale, is a fun and educational event for the entire family. Join staff and learn about herpetology, the study of reptiles and amphibians, while looking for the elusive creatures in the wild. The 196-acre Ferndale Preserve features a combined equestrian and hiking trail and offers beautiful views of Lake Apopka.
