Lake County’s Extension offers June classes on gardens, landscaping and raising cattle

RELEASE DATE: June 2, 2016

TAVARES — The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is inviting residents to the following classes in June:

What: Creating a Cottage Garden
When: Tuesday, June 7 at 9 a.m.
Where: Lake County Extension Center and Discovery Gardens, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares
Details: Learn about English cottage garden design and utilizing annuals and perennials for bursts of color. Lake County Master Gardeners Helen Reagin and Diane Toth will present the Cottage Garden lecture. The class is free, but space is limited. Registration is available online at http://bit.ly/1VkxdnH.

What: Saturday in the Gardens
When: Saturday, June 18 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Where: Lake County Extension Center and Discovery Gardens, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares
Details: Discovery Gardens is a 3.5-acre habitat featuring 20 themed gardens which are free to enter and open to the public. Families are invited to have a picnic on site, explore a plant maze, and discover gardens with themes such as Water Wise, Butterfly House, Southwest and more.

What: Right Plant, Right Place
When: Monday, June 20 at 6 p.m.
Where: Magnolia House, 100 Falling Acorn Ave., Groveland
Details: In partnership with the Wildflowers of Trilogy Garden Club, this class is part of the nine-part Florida-Friendly Landscaping speaker series. Learn how to grow a beautiful landscape that can save time, energy and money while protecting Florida’s future. This talk will cover how to select the right plants for the right site, one of the nine principles of Florida-Friendly Landscaping. What: Beef Cattle Basics
When: Thursday, June 23 at 6 p.m.
Where: Lake County Extension Center and Discovery Gardens, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares
Details: Learn the basics of raising cattle in this class taught by UF/IFAS Lake County Livestock Agent Megan Mann. Topics discussed will include cattle health, nutrition, husbandry, and marketing. This class will offer the basics needed to develop an understanding of the business of beef.
