Extension offers August classes on Florida-friendly landscaping, waterwise irrigation and more

RELEASE DATE: July 27, 2016

TAVARES — The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is welcoming residents to the following classes in August:

Florida-Friendly Landscaping on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m. at the Clermont Garden Club, 849 West Ave., Clermont. The Lake County Master Gardeners, in partnership with the Wildflowers of Trilogy Garden Club, present this class as part of the Florida-friendly Landscape Speaker Series. Participants will receive a general overview of the nine principles of Florida-friendly landscaping including watering efficiently and attracting wildlife. Pre-registration is required online for $5 at http://bit.ly/29JeOfP or by cash or check at the Lake County Extension Center during normal business hours.

Be Water-Wise: Landscape Irrigation and Protecting the Waterfront on Monday, Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Trilogy Magnolia House, 100 Falling Acorn Ave., Groveland. The Lake County Master Gardeners, in partnership with the Wildflowers of Trilogy Garden Club, presents the fourth class in the Florida-Friendly Landscape Speaker Series. Participants will learn irrigation recommendations and how they can protect lakes and waterbodies. Pre-registration is required online for $5 at http://bit.ly/29I2M6Y or by cash or check at the Lake County Extension Center during normal business hours.

Saturday in the Gardens Series: Florida Vegetable Gardening on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 10 a.m. at the Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. Topics presented by Brooke Moffis, UF/IFAS Residential Horticulture Agent, will include soil preparation, fertilization and plant selection. Pre-registration is required online for $5 at http://bit.ly/29OCfWJ or by cash or check at the Lake County Extension Center during normal business hours.

Poison in the Pasture on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. Florida is home to a number of native and invasive plants that pose serious health risks to grazing animals. This class teaches participants to identity, prevent, and control poisonous plants common to Central Florida pastures. Pre-registration is required online for $10 at http://poisoninthepasture.eventbrite.com or by cash or check at the Lake County Extension Center during normal business hours. Fee includes printed materials.

Annual 4-H Kick-Off Party on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. at the Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. All families with youth interested in 4-H are invited to attend a free party in the Discovery Gardens. Activities, games, and educational information will be offered.
