Parks & Trails invites residents to learn more about wildflowers, butterflies and birds during August events

RELEASE DATE: July 27, 2016

TAVARES — Lake County Parks & Trails is inviting nature lovers to free, ranger-led events next month. 

“August is the true beginning of fall migration with the arrival of early migrants like the Eastern Kingbird and the Louisiana Waterthrush, in addition to the numerous local birds whose young are now out and about on their own,” said Gallus Quigley, expert birder and Trails Coordinator with Parks & Trails. “Butterflies also increase in number during this season, as the summer blooms are near their peak.”

• Wildflower and Butterfly Hike
Saturday, Aug. 6 from 9-11 a.m.
PEAR Park – Wildlife Conservation Area, 4800 University Ave., Leesburg
Join staff at PEAR Park as butterflies and wildflowers reach their highest levels for the year, and learn some tips on how to make your yard into a beautiful butterfly haven.

• Quarterly Bird & Butterfly Surveys
Saturday, Aug. 13 from 7:30-11 a.m.
Lake May Reserve, 36300 County Road 44A, Eustis
Volunteers are needed to assist in surveying birds and butterflies. Experience is a plus but not required.

Saturday, Aug. 27 from 7:30-11 a.m.
Ellis Acres Reserve, 25302 County Road 42, Paisley
Volunteers are needed to assist in surveying birds and butterflies. Experience is a plus but not required.
