TAVARES — The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is welcoming residents to the following events in October:
Create a Healthy Lifestyle on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. at the Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. Learn the tools needed to help create healthy habits, including weight management, eating healthy on a budget, MyPlate, and incorporating physical activity. Fertilizing Your Landscape on Tuesday, Oct. 4 from noon – 1 p.m. at the Clermont Garden Club, 849 West Ave., Clermont. The Lake County Master Gardeners, in partnership with the Clermont Garden Club, will present the third class in the Florida-Friendly Landscape Speaker Series. The class will teach participants how to fertilize their landscapes to promote plant health and landscape beauty while preventing the pollution of water bodies. Chicken University on Thursday, Oct. 13 from 6-8 p.m. at the Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. This introductory course teaches the basics of poultry biology, health and nutrition. Wings & Wildflowers Festival Butterfly House and Flower Sale on Oct. 14-16 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday at Venetian Gardens, 201 E. Dixie Ave., Leesburg. The UF/IFAS Lake County Master Gardeners will host a free live butterfly house and wildflowers and butterfly plant sale. Visit www.wingsandwildflowers.com for details. Due to this event, there will be no Saturday in the Gardens series in October.
Mulching and Composting Your Landscape on Monday, Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. at the Trilogy Magnolia House, 100 Falling Acorn Ave., Groveland. The Lake County Master Gardeners, in partnership with the Wildflowers of Trilogy Garden Club, present the sixth class in the Florida-Friendly Landscape Speaker Series. Participants will learn how to create and use compost and select and apply mulch. These practices can improve soil health and impact the beauty of a homeowners’ landscape.
