Parks & Trails invites residents to participate in active, outdoor events in October

RELEASE DATE: September 26, 2016

TAVARES — As the weather cools, Lake County Parks & Trails is inviting nature lovers to free, ranger-led events during the month of October.  

Quarterly Bird & Butterfly Surveys

Saturday, Oct. 8 from 7:30-11 a.m.

Ferndale Preserve, 19220 County Road 455, Ferndale

Volunteers are needed to assist in surveying birds and butterflies. Experience is a plus but not required. 


Nocturnal Migration 

Saturday, Oct. 8 from 6-9 p.m.

Green Mountain Scenic Overlook & Trailhead

20700 CR 455, Minneola

Expert local birder Gallus Quigley will talk about bird migration and specifically about birds migrating at night. If weather permits we will listen for nocturnal flight calls and watch for birds passing in front of the moon. Bring insect repellant.


Knot Tying for Kids

Sunday, Oct. 9 from 9-11 a.m.

Lake May Reserve

36300 County Road 44A, Eustis

Eagle Scout John Cohoon will teach kids to tie more than their shoes at this fun and informative class; a must for honing children’s camping skills.  


Dora Canal Paddling Adventure

Friday, Oct. 21 from 9 a.m. - noon

Tavares Recreation Park

2030 W. Burleigh Blvd., Tavares

Known as “the most beautiful mile of water in the world,” and lined with towering cypress trees that are draped with Spanish moss, the Dora Canal is a safe haven for nesting ospreys, herons and egret. Staff will lead the group on this exploration paddle.

Volunteers are needed to assist in surveying birds and butterflies. Experience is a plus but not required. 


Pine Meadows Conservation Area Bird & Wildlife Hike

Saturday, Oct. 29 from 8-11 a.m.

Pine Meadows Conservation Area (open in October)

Pine Meadows Golf Course Road, Eustis

Expert birder Gallus Quigley will lead the first guided hike at this newly open conservation area. Learn about future plans while looking for the many birds and other wildlife species on the property. Bring insect repellent and water.
