Extension Service hosts plant sale, farm tour, cooking classes and more in November

RELEASE DATE: October 24, 2016

TAVARES — The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is inviting residents to the following classes and events in November:

Mulching and Composting in the Florida Garden from noon – 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at the Clermont Garden Club, 849 West Ave., Clermont. The Lake County Master Gardeners, in partnership with the Clermont Garden Club, will discuss how to select and apply mulch and create and use compost. Pre-registration is required online at http://bit.ly/2dCDRHS for $5 or by cash or check at the Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares, during normal business hours. 

UF/IFAS Small Ruminant Production Conference from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3 at the Lake County Extension Center. Join UF faculty and local experts to learn about genetic improvement of sheep and goats, pasture management, milk production, parasite prevention, and alternative marketing. Pre-registration is required online at http://bit.ly/2eKgmIQ for $30 and includes printed materials and lunch.

Happy Holiday Meals at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 7 at the Lady Lake Public Library, 225 W. Guava St., Lady Lake. Learn how to prepare healthy holiday recipes without sacrificing flavor. This program teaches participants to make the right food choices while still being able to enjoy their favorite holiday meals. Free registration is required online at http://bit.ly/2ezIdMK.

Healthy Cooking for 1 or 2 at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at Minneola City Hall, 800 U.S. Highway 27, Minneola. In partnership with the Minneola Schoolhouse Library, this hands-on class teaches how to downsize and simplify meal preparation and includes a demonstration and tasting. Free registration is required online at http://bit.ly/2eKQVs1.

Lake County Farm Tour from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17.  The public is invited to a guided bus tour of some Lake County agricultural businesses and attractions during the 7th Annual Lake County Farm Tour. Stops include D & J Apiary, Sunsational Citrus, Rocking Horse Stables, Promise Habitat Services and The Dam Smoker. Participants will meet at the Lake County Extension Center. The Farm Tour costs $40 and includes transportation and lunch. Registration is required by Friday, Nov. 11 online at http://www.2016lakecountyfarmtour.eventbrite.com.

Plant Sale and “Saturday in the Gardens: Florida Bulb Gardening” at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Lake County Extension Center. Entry to the plant sale is free, and hours are between 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Bulb gardening class participants will learn about the selection and care of bulbs that can be grown successfully in Central Florida. Pre-registration for the class is required online at http://bit.ly/2f0u0wx for $5 or by cash or check at the Lake County Extension Center during normal business hours. 

Building Backyard Habitats at 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 21 at the Trilogy Magnolia House, 100 Falling Acorn Ave., Groveland. The Lake County Master Gardeners, in partnership with the Wildflowers of Trilogy Garden Club, will present the principles that can be used to attract butterflies, birds, bats and bees. Pre-registration for the class is required online at http://bit.ly/2enXVPD for $5 or by cash or check at the Lake County Extension Center during normal business hours.
