SORRENTO — The East Lake County Library, located at 31340 S. County Road 437 in Sorrento, graciously accepted the “Civic Member of the Year Award” from the East Lake County Chamber of Commerce at an evening banquet on Jan. 23 at the Red Tail Golf Club in Heathrow Country Estates.
“The library was selected because they help us with so many events,” said Pam Jennelle, Executive Director of the Chamber. “We have our board meetings there, we do Christmas events for the community there and I know when we hold events there it’s an imposition on library staff but they are always so helpful and smiling.”
According to George Dore, Branch Manager, the library is a community focal point for the information that it provides and the annual programs it hosts, such as a bluegrass festival, poetry contest and book sales.
“It was always my intent to make the community and us work in partnership and try to be a place where the community can come for programs, general information and to use our meeting room,” he said. “This award reaffirmed what we are trying to do out here is exactly what we intended to and it’s working.”
In the future, the library hopes to attract more young adults to the facility. This year the library is working to establish a young adult advisory group.
“If it works, the idea behind it is to give them more input into the library, including things they would like to see us purchase and programs they would like for us to do,” Dore said.
Also receiving chamber recognition at the banquet was Tommy Hight, individual member award, and Harris Mini Storage, business member of the year.
