Lake County to dedicate garden bench in memory of 4-H agent

RELEASE DATE: March 16, 2017

TAVARES — The Lake County Board of County Commissioners, the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County and its 4-H Youth Development Program are dedicating a garden bench in memory of 4-H Agent Alice B. Ayers at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 25.

This dedication ceremony will be held in the Nectar Garden at the Extension Center’s Discovery Gardens, located at 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares, with a reception immediately to follow.

Ayers, a longtime resident of Lake County, worked for the Extension from 1968-1992 and also served as Lake County’s 4-H Foundation President. She volunteered for numerous civic and charitable organizations including Kiwanis, the Howey-in-the-Hills Garden and Civic Club, the Lake Association for Home and Community Education, the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, as well as local hospitals.

Ayers passed away in 2014. Last year, the Lake County Board of County Commissioners approved naming the bench in her honor.

“Alice Ayers’ work contributed significantly to numerous communities in Lake County, and in memory of Alice Ayers’ life and work, the Board of County Commissioners wishes to place a bench at the Lake County Extension Center dedicated to Alice Ayers’ memory and affix a plaque upon said bench memorializing this dedication,” read the commission’s resolution.

The mission of the UF/IFAS Extension in Lake County is to develop knowledge in agricultural, human and natural resources and to make that knowledge accessible to sustain and enhance the quality of human life. The Extension service provides free consultations, as well as educational programs on a variety of subjects.
