‘Celebration of African-American Creativity’ art exhibit opens Friday at Tavares City Hall

RELEASE DATE: January 31, 2007

TAVARES — The City of Tavares will host on Friday, Feb. 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. a visual and performing arts reception titled “Celebration of African-American Creativity” at City Hall, located at 201 E. Main St.

Featured during this month’s Art in the Square exhibit is a collection of Shona sculpture. According to Tammey Rogers, Community Services Director for the City of Tavares, this is an unusual exhibit as it includes exquisite stone sculpture that is created by members of the Shona Tribe from Zimbabwe, Africa. The sale of the art provides financial support for the tribesmen and their families.

Returning to the Art in the Square exhibit is original Highwaymen artist Issac H. Knight. Knight will paint a piece during the opening reception that will be auctioned for sale with a minimum bid.

Knight is best known for his scenery and landscape paintings, but admits that he has painted a few still life pieces as well. Knight is now retired from full-time employment and enjoys painting Florida scenery as he travels.

Additionally, the opening reception will include performances by: Ayanna the Story Lady from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; the St. John’s Free Methodist Church Choir from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; and jazz-blues guitarist Victor Kusik from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

“This cultural event is a precursor to the Third Annual African-American Heritage Festival held on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wooton Park in Tavares,” Rogers said. “This event will feature history and cultural learning, music, food, arts, balloons, praise dancers, rappers, crafts, steppers, moon walks and more.”
