GROVELAND —To coincide with prom season, students will learn firsthand about the consequences of driving under the influence during a mock DUI crash held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, April 19 at South Lake High School, 15600 Silver Eagle Road, Groveland.
The Lake County Community Traffic Safety Team (CTST) will host the event with high school juniors and seniors at the school’s football field. The educational program is designed to show how alcohol-related traffic accidents can impact all involved.
“This mock DUI crash provides a realistic look at the serious and horrifying consequences of drinking and driving,” said Denis Dietz, chairperson of the CTST. “The demonstrations help encourage students not to drive under the influence.”
The mock DUI crash is made possible with the help of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners Public Works Department; the Fruitland Park Police Department; the Lake County Sheriff's Office; South Lake High School students and staff; the City of Groveland Police and Fire Department; Lake County Fire Rescue; Lake EMS; the Office of the State Attorney, Fifth Judicial Circuit of Florida; Air Care; Revis Towing & Recovery of Groveland; and Brewer & Sons Funeral Home.
The Lake County CTST is a multi-jurisdictional agency working in cooperation with Lake County, the Florida Department of Transportation, local municipalities, various community organizations and concerned citizens. The CTST uses a multi-disciplinary approach to solve roadway safety problems in Lake County. The team is comprised of individuals representing engineering, law enforcement, emergency services, traffic safety education and the public.
The mock DUI is one of a series being hosted during prom season.
