TAVARES — The Lake County Department of Growth Management, Building Services Division, recently unveiled a new technology that aims to streamline overall efficiency and customer service.
Charlotte, N.C.-based company MobileHWY recently introduced Mobile INSPECTOR and Mobile CONTRACTOR in Lake County. Armed with a BlackBerry phones, Lake County’s building inspectors can now receive real-time information in the field, including viewing updated inspection schedules, researching inspection and contractor histories, creating new inspections and instantly submitting completed inspections.
“This technology provides our inspectors with an easy to use, inexpensive device that allows building inspectors to complete their daily tasks in one place without carrying a cumbersome laptop to construction sites,” said Dale Greiner, Director of the Building Services Division.
Another benefit of the new system is a reduction of paper usage. Typically every morning each of Lake County’s 25 building inspectors would receive a printout of about 25 to 30 pages of their day’s assignments.
“When we used to print inspections in the morning we were using up to two reams [1,000 pages] of paper each day and now we have eliminated that,” Greiner said.
Building inspectors are not the only ones benefiting from the new technology. Contractors can sign up for the Mobile CONTRACTOR system to access specific building information from a mobile phone or computer with Internet access. In particular, the system allows contractors to schedule and cancel inspections; view inspection history, results, status and permit information; and receive instant inspection information.
