Lake County issues voluntary evacuation order in Astor and Lake George

RELEASE DATE: September 8, 2017

ASTOR —Lake County has issued a voluntary evacuation order effective immediately due to significant rainfall forecast near the Astor and Lake George areas.

Lake County officials are encouraging residents in the area to safely self-evacuate by Saturday afternoon. Those choosing not to evacuate may be faced with impassable roads once Irma hits, and will not be able to be reached by first responders in the event of an emergency.

Lake County is opening a total of 13 emergency shelters at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9. Shelter guests are encouraged to bring their IDs for expedited check-in. For more information, visit www.lakecountyfl.gov/hurricane_guide/lake_county_shelter_locations.aspx.

The closest emergency shelters to Astor are Spring Creek Elementary, 44440 Spring Creek Road, Paisley and Umatilla Elementary, 401 Lake St., Umatilla. Both shelters are pet-friendly and Umatilla can also accommodate special needs persons.

Before flooding occurs, move immediately to higher ground or stay on high ground. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!” Just six inches of moving water can knock people down and two feet of water can sweep vehicles away.
