‘Saturday in the Gardens’ series offers class on Florida-Friendly Landscaping; native plant sale

RELEASE DATE: May 11, 2018

TAVARES — Lloyd Singleton, Director of the UF/IFAS Extension Center in Lake County, will offer expert insight on the nine principles of Florida-Friendly Landscaping including real-life examples and hurdles to avoid. He will present the Saturday in the Gardens Series “Conventional to Florida-Friendly with Native Plants” at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 19 at the Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares.

“Learning the principles is easy, but implementing them successfully using native plants takes some real thought,” said Singleton. “The rewards are great, and worth the effort.”

Participants will learn about habitat, soil, sunlight, mulch, irrigation, and more, to help achieve an improved wildlife habit, a lower water bill, less “fossil fueled” maintenance, and more active gardening with physical and mental health benefits.

Free registration is required online at https://conventionaltoffl.eventbrite.com

A native plant sale at Discovery Gardens will follow the presentation, and is open to the public. Discovery Gardens is open Monday – Friday and the third Saturday of each month, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The 3.5-acre property is home to 23 themed gardens and is free to visit.
