Lake County Extension to host Farm to Table Cooking class, horse workshop and more

RELEASE DATE: June 8, 2018

TAVARES — The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is hosting the following events and programs in June:

  

Farm to Table Cooking

June 13 from 11 a.m. - noon

Long and Scott Farms, 26216 County Road 448A, Mount Dora

Learn how to prepare produce fresh from the farm. Long & Scott Farms consists of 1,200 acres producing Zellwood Sweet Corn, pickling cucumbers and both red and green cabbage, along with a variety of other produce. Steps to Good Health (for Teens)

June 13, 20 and 27 from 2- 4 p.m.

Marion Baysinger Memorial Library, 756 W. Broad St., Groveland 

Improve your health by learning about physical health and nutrition-rich foods. Use smart goals to achieve physical fitness and develop a nutrition plan that turns you into a super teen!  For details, call 352-429-5840.

 

UF Roots Up Series: Grow and Eat with the Mediterranean Diet

June 16 from 10 a.m. – noon

Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares

Discover the scientific support of health benefits associated with a Mediterranean lifestyle. Learn how to grow fruit that aligns with this way of eating and living, while discovering how to integrate locally available food. Eating with Diabetes

June 19 from 10 a.m. – noon

Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares

Budgeting Basics

June 26 from 11 a.m. - noon

Leesburg Public Library, 100 E. Main Street, Leesburg

Participants will understand the importance of managing money to reach goals, build wealth and relieve stress. Learn how to create a spending plan, track your expenses and find spending gaps and leaks. Participants will receive a UF money management calendar. Horse Owners Educational Workshop

June 30 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares

Enjoy a hands-on educational program catering to Central Florida horse owners. Topics to be covered include pasture management, toxic weed identification, manure management and composting, complying with best management practices, feeding the equine athlete, equine nutrition myths and misconceptions, basic first aid for horse owners and disease prevention and treatment. Your $25 ticket includes lunch and a booklet of printed material. Those with food allergies should be aware that food items prepared or distributed as part of UF/IFAS Extension events may contain milk, egg, gluten, wheat, soybean, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish; and could be prepared in a facility that may be exposed to any of these ingredients.
