Evening update from the Lake County EOC

RELEASE DATE: February 6, 2007

TAVARES — The following information is an update from the Lake County EOC:
  • All Lake County residents that need assistance getting storm-related debris to the roadside are encouraged to call 1-866-540-2325 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. Residents should make three separate piles: storm-related debris, vegetative debris and household trash. Please do not block mailboxes, driveways, storm drains or fire hydrants with debris. The most current numbers for debris materials collected is 25,000 cubic yards.

  • Residents are encouraged to first contact their home insurance company before seeking building permits or FEMA assistance. To apply for FEMA assistance, call 1-800-621-FEMA or log on to www.fema.gov.

  • Three Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) are open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. These centers provide people with an opportunity to meet face-to-face with recovery specialists. Representatives with the state and federal governments will be on site to answer questions and provide recovery information. Written materials about various assistance programs are also available to individuals. FEMA assistance helps supplement insurance claims. The centers are located at:

    • 31039 Lake Mack Road, Deland, FL 32720

  • Damage assessment has been nearly completed for unincorporated Lake County resulting in an estimate of $15.2 million. Specific structural damage numbers include

  • The following water and ice distribution and feeding sites will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Feb. 6:
    • Lady Lake American Legion, 669 W. Lady Lake Blvd.
    • Lake Mack Fire Station, 31039 Lake Mack Road
    • Lady Lake Mobile Home Park, 2934 Lake Griffin View Road (feeding station only)

  • Nine Emergency Response Vehicles (ERV) from the American Red Cross are deployed to damaged areas. Personnel from the American Red Cross are dispensing food and refreshments from the ERVs.

  • Five behavioral health-counseling teams - four from the American Red Cross and one from the Lake County Health Department - have been deployed to affected areas to assist with counseling and mental-health needs.

  • The Lake County Health Department mobile unit is stationed at the Lake Mack Fire Station from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This unit is assisting residents with minor medical needs, including offering free tetanus and flu shots. The unit is staffed with a nurse and medical technician.

  • At a press conference today in Lady Lake, Gov. Charlie Crist expanded the Florida Disaster Recovery Fund, formerly known as the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund, to assist in the long-term needs of residents impacted by the deadly tornadoes. All donations to the Florida Disaster Recovery Fund are tax-deductible. Donations can be made securely online by visiting www.VolunteerFloridaFoundation.org or by calling 1-800-825-3786. Checks are also accepted and can be made payable to the Florida Disaster Recovery Fund and mailed to Volunteer Florida Foundation, 401 S. Monroe St., Tallahassee, Florida 32301.
