Lake County Animal Services makes call for donations of pet food and livestock feed

RELEASE DATE: February 7, 2007

TAVARES — The Lake County Animal Shelter is in dire need of dog and cat food (dry and canned) and livestock grain to feed the 81 displaced animals housed at the shelter and many more additional pets and livestock still with their owners in the Lake Mack area.

Baby Mack The shelter’s current stock of resources has been totally depleted by the recent tragedy. The shelter is located at 28123 County Road 561 in Tavares. Donations are accepted from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call the Lake County Animal Services Division at (352) 343-9688.

The Division’s involvement in this catastrophic event began early Friday morning in response to an aggressive dog that was preventing rescue workers from getting to a victim. This one event started a whirlwind activity for four Animal Control Officers and the entire staff of the Division at the Animal Shelter.

One of many rescued animals by control officers included a goat, which is a proud mother of a newborn baby goat that was delivered at the Animal Shelter on Feb. 4. According to Rene Segraves, Assistant Director of Animal Services, the new goat is doing well and the employees have lovingly named him “Mack.”

Animal Services are currently trying to reunite these displaced animals with their owners. In addition, the Division has two teams circulating pet supplies to the families in the Lake Mack area. These teams are also looking for animals that are possibly lost and scared. If anyone sees what appears to be a lost animal, do not approach the animal and contact Animal Services immediately at (352) 343-9688.
