Evening Update from the Lake County EOC

RELEASE DATE: February 8, 2007

TAVARES — The following information is an update from the Lake County EOC:
  • All Lake County residents that need assistance getting storm-related debris to the roadside are encouraged to call 1-866-540-2325 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. Residents should make three separate piles: storm-related debris, plant debris and household trash. Please do not block mailboxes, driveways, storm drains or fire hydrants with debris. The most current number for debris materials collected is 25,916 cubic yards.
  • The Lake County Department of Environmental Services reports routine garbage pick up has been progressing as scheduled in the affected areas. Emergency officials located several cans today of suspected household hazardous-waste material. If any clean-up workers discover unidentified household hazardous waste during debris removal, they are encouraged to report the location to the Citizens Information Line at (352) 343-9732.
  • The Building Division is offering extended hours from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday-Friday, for expedited permitting of storm-damaged properties. The Building Services Division has a plans examiner and building technician stationed at the Lady Lake DRC on Lakeview Drive to issue non-structural permits from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Residents are encouraged to first contact their home insurance company before seeking building permits or FEMA assistance. To apply for FEMA assistance, call 1-800-621-FEMA or log on to www.fema.gov. Three Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) are open daily to serve Lake County residents from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. These centers provide people with an opportunity to meet face-to-face with recovery specialists. Representatives with the state and federal governments, as well as mental health counselors, will be on site to answer questions and provide recovery information. The centers are located at:
    • 38521 Lakeview Drive, Lady Lake, FL 32159
    • 1985 Laurel Manor Drive, Lady Lake, FL 32162
    • 31039 Lake Mack Road, DeLand, FL 32720
  • Damage assessment has been nearly completed for Lake County resulting in an estimate of $24.8 million. Specific structural damage numbers include: unincorporated Lake County 206 damaged and 93 destroyed homes; and incorporated Lady Lake 163 damaged and 91 destroyed homes.
  • Disaster-relief supplies, including water, ice, food, tarps and tents, are scheduled to be available on Feb. 9 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lake Mack Fire Station, located at 31039 Lake Mack Road.
  • Ten Emergency Response Vehicles (4 in the Lake Mack area and 6 in the Lady Lake area) from the American Red Cross are deployed to damaged areas making house-to-house calls. Personnel are dispensing food and refreshments from these units.
  • Lake County Fire Rescue Division marked damaged transformers with GPS for the power company.
  • The Lake County Health Department will have an immunization team at the Lake Mack DRC. They are currently assessing the Sunshine Mobile Home Park area to assess their needs. Additional tetanus shots have been purchased for volunteers.
  • Lake County is now providing bus transportation from the Lake Mack DRC to a local camp to allow residents access to bathroom facilities, a place to sit down and eat hot meals and to receive other supplies. This bus service is provided from 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.(last pickup at 4:30 p.m.)

  • Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) have 200 volunteers in the damaged areas. They are assisting homeowners with clearing driveways, clearing debris, and placing tarps on roofs.  A base is being established at 1800 Treadway School Road and CR 473 in Leesburg to become operational at 6:00 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9.
  • A boil water notice is in effect for the Blue Parrott RV Park.
