CLERMONT — More than 100 bicyclists from the Bike-A-Thon, sponsored by Central Florida Chapter of the Florida Planning and Zoning Association, are expected to attend the grand-opening ceremony for the 4-mile South Lake Trail.
The 10:30 a.m. ceremony will take place at 14428 Old Highway 50, approximately 1/2 mile east of the intersection with North Hancock Road.
Joining various County and municipal officials at the ceremony will be participants of a Bike-A-Thon. Beginning at 10 a.m. at Clermont Waterfront Park, bicyclists from the Bike-A-Thon will ride to meet dignitaries at the ceremony location for the trail's ribbon cutting. Registration is accepted before the event. For more information, visit www.fpza.org/centralevents.shtml.
All proceeds from the Bike-A-Thon are going to the National Center for Boundless Playgrounds, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping communities create specialized playgrounds, such as the one at Lake Idamere Park in Tavares. Participants of the Bike-A-Thon also have a chance to win a bicycle donated by Sun Cycle of Tavares.
The South Lake Trail connects the Lake Minneola Scenic and West Orange trails. This connection creates more than 30 miles of contiguous recreational trails between the counties of Lake and Orange and the municipalities of Minneola, Clermont, Oakland, Winter Garden, Ocoee and Apopka. Bike-A-Thon participants are encouraged to ride as far as they can because many of them are receiving donations based on the number of miles they can pedal.
Ceremony parking is available on site. Interested individuals can also park at one of three trailhead locations and walk or bike to the ceremony. The trailhead locations are:
• Clermont Waterfront Park — 100 Third St.
• Minneola trailhead — 315 E. Madison St.
• West Orange Trail County Line Station — 17914 Old County Road 50
