County park rangers to guide two walks this month

RELEASE DATE: May 3, 2007

TAVARES — Lake County park rangers will lead nature hikes twice this month, May 5 and 12, at PEAR and Lake Idamere parks.

The first activity from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, is a Bird & Butterfly Walk at PEAR Park, located at 5336 University Ave., Leesburg. The walk is about 1.5 miles along a hiking trail, fields and woodland edges looking for migrating songbirds, native plants and butterflies.

The second Bird & Butterfly Walk is from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, at Lake Idamere Park, located at 12335 County Road 448, Tavares. The walk is about 1.5 miles along a hiking trail, fields and woodland edges looking for migrating songbirds, native plants and butterflies. This event also includes a guided canoe trip on Lake Idamere. Participants are required to bring their own canoeing and kayaking equipment.

For both walks, participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Park rangers also recommend bringing binoculars, field guides, sunscreen, insect repellent and water. For more information, call park rangers Wendy Poag or Gallus Quigley at (352) 742-0992 or e-mail wpoag@lakecountyfl.gov.
