Lake County issues evacuations for Wekiva area

RELEASE DATE: May 7, 2007

TAVARES — A brushfire that broke out today in the Wekiva River area is spreading southwest. A mandatory evacuation is issued for Lynchs Lane, Wekiva Pines Boulevard, Webb Way and Quail Hollow. In addition, officials have issued a voluntary evacuation for residents south of State Road 46, including residences off County Road 433 and Wekiva River Road.

Residents can shelter with the American Red Cross at Sorrento Christian Center, located at 32441 N. County Road 437 in Sorrento. This shelter is located about a 1/4-mile north of State Road 46.

The Lake County Fire Rescue Division is working in concert with fire departments from local municipalities and adjoining counties as well as the Florida Division of Forestry to control the fire. For more information, call the Lake County Department of Public Safety at (352) 343-9458.

As Lake County continues to be under a red-flag warning for wildfires, the Department of Public Safety would like to remind residents that a countywide burn ban, in accordance with County Code 10.5-75, is still in effect. The mandatory burn ban affects all of unincorporated Lake County and prohibits all outdoor burning that has not been specifically permitted by the Florida Division of Forestry. This includes burning yard waste, bon fires and campfires on private or County property.

One of the more effective ways to reduce the possibility of wildfires is to clear underbrush or debris blown down in storms. These dry plants and vegetation create more fuel for wildfires. It is recommended that homeowners try to maintain a 30-foot defensible space around their home to act as a firebreak.
