Firefighters quickly contain brushfire; evacuations are lifted

RELEASE DATE: May 7, 2007

TAVARES — Firefighters from 11 different agencies quickly made a stop on a brushfire today in Lake County near the Wekiva River. As of 5:15 p.m., evacuation orders were lifted for the area.

According to officials, the 1,000-acre brushfire is 100 percent contained, however, crews will be stationed at the scene overnight to watch for flare-ups. Firefighters warn the next few days could bring worsening brushfire conditions with increasing winds and no rain in the forecast.

The Lake County Fire Rescue Division will continue working tomorrow with fire departments from local municipalities and adjoining counties as well as the Florida Division of Forestry to monitor the area. For more information, call the Lake County Department of Public Safety at (352) 343-9458.

As Lake County continues to be under a red-flag warning for wildfires, the Department of Public Safety would like to remind residents that a countywide burn ban, in accordance with County Code 10.5-75, is still in effect. The mandatory burn ban affects all of unincorporated Lake County and prohibits all outdoor burning that has not been specifically permitted by the Florida Division of Forestry. This includes burning yard waste, bon fires and campfires on private or County property.

One of the more effective ways to reduce the possibility of wildfires is to clear underbrush or debris blown down in storms. These dry plants and vegetation create more fuel for wildfires. It is recommended that homeowners try to maintain a 30-foot defensible space around their home to act as a firebreak.
