TAVARES — The Lake County Board of County Commissioners will consider an emergency ordinance at its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, May 22, at 9 a.m. in the Commission Chambers, located on the second floor of the Lake County Administration Building, 315 W. Main St., Tavares, to increase the homestead exemption for low-income elderly from $25,000 to $50,000.
Under state statute, counties and municipalities were given the provision to allow for up to $25,000 in an additional homestead exemption for low-income elderly. The Lake County Commission enacted this provision through an ordinance in 1999. Recent changes in the statute, approved by the state legislature during this past session, allows for local governments to increase the exemption amount for low-income elderly to up to $50,000.
The Board of County Commissioners will consider making this change, retroactive for this year's tax bill, through an emergency ordinance at the May 22 meeting.
